StepJockey
An idea to change the way employees move around their workplace, stepping up to fight the problem and start a revolution in corporate wellness.
Why aren’t the good things labelled in life?
StepJockey started as an idea, when one day, an original founder of StepJockey heard her daughter mention ‘why aren’t the good things labelled in life’. As a nutritional expert, this sparked an idea to address just that. Why not label the benefits of exercise in our day-to-day. This moved on to the idea of helping to encourage people to simply take the stairs through labelling health benefits, as stair use has a substantial benifits on health.
This was the start of an idea that then became StepJockey. A wellness programme that utilised stairs, signs, technology and much more.
The opportunity
The idea was for StepJockey to utilise the health benefits of using stairs within the workplace by labelling them with QR codes that are scannable, and therefore, giving the ability to track steps within a building. At the start, StepJockey was seed-funded by the UK Department of Health to help combat sedentary behaviour.
At this stage, StepJockey founders were building a team and looking to partner with a tech agency that would help bring in the infrastructure and have the knowledge to consult on how best to create this the digital product. This is where we come in!

What happened
An integrated team
With the scale of the StepJockey idea, we suggested to StepJockey a full-scale integration through a partnership.
Our founder Matt became the chief technology officer (CTO) and our developers were working full time on building StepJockey.
We set up StepJockey on Slack and had daily meetings working as an integrated internal team, ready to take the product into a new future.
Building a technology platform
StepJockey needed a base technology platform that other technologies and services could interact with to create the StepJockey ecosystem. There were many considerations such as security, scalability and maintainability that went into deciding on the core technology used for the platform.
We worked as an integrated team to create the StepJockey technology platform. After several iterations of user and stakeholder research, an MVP of the platform using Microsoft .Net technologies was created. The first platform contained the business logic to process, store and link several areas of StepJockey.
End-User web portal & mobile app
With the main platform development underway, we started the discovery of the end user-facing web portal and mobile apps. These could be crucial in engaging with our end-users and providing the best possible experience while participating in a StepJockey Programme.
We carried out a discovery workshop with the necessary stakeholders to define the digital product strategy and initial build steps that we then developed. The mobile apps were outsourced to an app agency, where we worked in partnership, assisting with platform integration and testing.
Client communication toolkit & portal
In parallel with the development of the end user-facing products, the team worked on the client-facing products. It was important to discover the types of client stakeholders we would have, such as HR / Facilities managers / comms teams and how they would need to interact with StepJockey to roll the StepJockey programmes out within their organisation.
After the initial discovery & research, the team created an online Digital Communications Toolkit, with content that HR / Comms teams could use to help engage their employees with StepJockey. Over time and through client feedback we developed a portal dashboard that gave clients the ability to create an account and log in so that they can receive data, analyse how their employees are engaging with StepJockey and see positive impacts it’s having on their health.
The result
StepJockey has gone through multiple iterations and has gone on to raise more than £1m for further growth. With this growth came a new re shuffle of management, bringing in a new CEO Zed Vakil to help progress and direct the business. We worked as an integrated team throughout with our founder Matt as CTO and our developers at hand to assist new innovations within StepJockey.
StepJockey has become a well-recognised name in the world of workplace wellness and continues to engage with multinational organisations, helping their employees lead a more active and healthy life.
Hiyield ran the digital side of StepJockey, including Matt Ville being StepJockey’s CTO and much more. The work, diligence and camaraderie was exceptional. A fine team and well qualified to undertake your projects and also have some fun! Highly recommended.
